Peace in Afghanistan means peace in China: envoy

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): On his maiden visit to southern Kandahar province, China’s ambassador Deng Xijun on Sunday said peace in Afghanistan meant peace in China and that was why his country remained committing to assisting Kabul in its efforts to achieve peace and stability.
Deng Xijun, who arrived in Kandahar City, held talks at the governor’s house with Governor Dr. Humayun Azizi, Wolesi Jirga member Hamidzai Lalai, provincial council members, local businessmen and others.

Indonesia ready for positive role in Afghan peace bid: envoy

KABUL (Pajhwok): Indonesia’s Ambassador to Afghanistan Anshory Tadjudin on Sunday said his country was ready to play a positive role in advancing the Afghan peace and reconciliation process.
The envoy was addressing participants of a ceremony marking Indonesia’s 70th Independence Day in Kabul.
Afghan government officials, members of parliament, central bank governor, political and religious figures attended the ceremony.

Dismantle terror safe havens, US tells Pakistan

WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): Addressing one of Afghanistan’s long-pending concerns, US National Security Advisor Susan Rice on Sunday urged Pakistan to intensify efforts against terrorist safe havens on its soil.
During her meetings with top Pakistani leaders including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief Gen. Raheel Sharif in Islamabad, she praised their role in the peace talks with the Taliban.

Make real efforts for Afghan peace: China to Pakistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): China on Wednesday called on Pakistan to make real efforts as part of the Afghanistan reconciliation process.
China’s Ambassador to Afghanistan Deng Xijun said this during a meeting with President Ashraf Ghani’s National Security Advisor Hanif Atmar in Kabul, said Tawab Ghorzang, the National Security Council spokesman.
He quoted the Chinese envoy as adding that his country had urged Pakistan to make real and honest efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Foreign propaganda reinforces violent streak among youth’

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Afghanistan Liaison Office (TLO) officials on Thursday said the youth and influential figures should take part in efforts at countering the philosophy of violence because foreign propaganda and problems at home had reinforced violent streak among the youth.
TLO foreign relations official Mohammad Nabi Tadbir told Pajhwok Afghan News they held a workshop involving youth from various provinces and from Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Jalalabad to consult them on efforts at countering violence.

New Zabul peace body chief vows to woo rebels

QALAT (Pajhwok): The High Peace Council (HPC)’s provincial committee chief for southern Zabul province on Tuesday said people and tribes could play an important role in bringing peace to Afghanistan.

Pakistan's response to Ghani letter being evaluated

KABUL (Pajhwok): Pakistan has replied to an eight-article letter from President Ashraf Ghani during a visit to Islamabad by a high-level Afghan delegation, a source privy to the discussions revealed on Saturday.
Ghani sent the letter to Pakistani authorities in April after a spat of violence, in which dozens of people were killed and wounded. The National Directorate Security has accused special circles in the Pakistani military of involvement in a recent wave of attacks.

Unemployment forces Kunduz youth to join rebels’ ranks

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Some educated youth have no choice but to join ranks of insurgents in northern Kunduz province, an official said.
Abdul Ghafoor Hotak, youth director at information and culture department, told Pajhwok Afghan News in the last five years they could not provide employment opportunities in government departments for over 1,200 youth having bachelors and masters’ degrees and 18 with doctorates.
Some of these youth, he said, due to poverty and unemployment had no choice but to take up arms against the government.
