‘Only intra-Afghan talks can end 40-year-old conflict’

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Ulema Council for the western zone believes the only way to steer Afghanistan out of its long running conflict is intra-Afghan dialogue, saying the war-torn nation would not reach prosperity and development without peace.
Maulvi Khudadad Saleh, head of Ulema Council for the western zone, on Monday said peace should prevail in the entire country and asked the warring sides to seek the path of peace by shunning war without engaging foreigners in the process.

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): “I had two sons. One of them lost his life to an airstrike by foreign forces and the second has been suffering from paralysis, breaking my back,” sobs an anguished man from northern Kunduz province.

On Dec. 4, nine people -- most of them children -- were killed when a mortar shell fired by Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers hit a mosque in the Otarayo of central Maidan Wardak province.

Mullah Omar died in April 2013, Taliban confirm

On June 29, Afghan government officials had told media Omar had died in a hospital in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi. But they gave no further details of the one-eyed leader’s demise.
Omar’s death was also verified by Pakistani officials, who shared the information with the Afghan government. The Afghan cabinet discussed the issue following confirmation by Pakistan.
“Mullah Omar died two years and four months ago of tuberculosis. He has been buried on the Afghan side of the border,” a former Taliban minister then told a Pakistani newspaper.

Pakistan won’t be asked to help revive peace talks: CEO

KABUL (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Office Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Monday said Afghanistan would not ask for Pakistan’s help for arranging the second round of talks with the Taliban.
The Afghan government and Taliban held their first face-to-face talks in Islamabad almost two months back. The second round was expected to take place on July 31, but cancelled due to announcement of Mullah Mohammad’s death.

Germany to Pakistan: Honour Afghan peace pledge

KABUL (Pajhwok): Germany on Sunday urged Pakistan to play its part in reviving the stalled Afghan peace process and the window initially opened for the parlays should not be entirely shut.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who attended a ceremony marking the 100th year of Afghan-German friendship in Kabul, said given the current situation, the Afghanistan peace process should continue so that instabilities that threatened both Pakistan and Afghanistan were resolved.
