Oslo Conference an opportunity for talking peace

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan government and Taliban delegates took part in an international conference, attended by foreign ministers from 150 countries, on June 15-16 in Oslo on ways of ending conflicts.
Norway said there were no plans yet for official peace negotiations between the warring sides. "There's no plan for formal peace talks. If you want to reach peace, those who disagree must talk together," Norwegian Foreign Minister Boerge Brende said.

KABUL (Pajhwok): At the very outset, the two-day meeting in Qatar was clearly characterised as a non-official contact, where all participants were free to express their personal opinions on a non-attributive basis. It was repeatedly clarified the meeting was not supposed to be any sort of negotiation.
There were several presentations and interventions by people linked to the various parties and groups of Afghanistan, to civil society representatives, including a few women, and United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) officials.

Japan Conference on peace-building in Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): Taliban and Afghan government representatives, while sticking to their guns,met at an international conference in Tokyo on June 27-28, 2012, indicating their rare willingness to discuss prospects for dialogue and peace in the war-torn country.
Qari Din Mohammad Hanif, a member of the Taliban’s political office in Qatar and High Peace Council (HPC) Secretary Masoom Stanikzai sat together for direct talksat the conference on peace-building in Afghanistan, organised by Doshisha University’s Graduate School of Global Studies.

French think-tank hosts intra-Afghan talks in Paris

KABUL (Pajhwok): Hosted by the French think-tankFoundation for Strategic Research, the Paris Conference -- Intra-Afghan Dialogue -- on the country’s future was held in France on December 21-22, 2011.
Representatives from Afghan government, the Taliban,Hekmatyar-led Hezb-i-Islami, and political opposition groups gathered for the exploratory talks onthe outskirts of Paris -- an important face-to-face gathering among stakeholders and warring factions.

Maldives Conference

KABUL (Pajhwok): Delegates, including representatives from two major insurgent groups -- the Taliban, the Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) -- the Karzai government,known political parties and lawmakers met in the Maldives in May 2010 to discuss peace prospects.
Organised by Humayun Jarir -- son-in-law of Gulbadin Hekmatyar, the Hezb-i-Islami chief -- the informal meeting brought together former HIA leader Khalid Farooqi, Wolesi Jirga member Abdul Sattar Khawasi, Senator Maulvi Arsalan Rahmani and several others.
