Last week, Pakistan Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif visited Kabul for the first time since the national unity government’s inauguration. He headed a high-level delegation, including Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Gen. The Afghan government continues to pursue peace efforts through track one and back-channel diplomacy over the last five to seven years. However, the efforts have been fruitless and the conflict continues to hamper peace, stability and securityin Afghanistan. Each failure dashes hopes among Afghans before they are revived by a renewed process and thus the vicious circle continues.

In order to achieve their nefarious designs, some regional countries have long been trying to perpetuate instability in Afghanistan. For obvious reasons, they do not want the Afghans to live in peace and prosperity. Instead they are out to push their expansionist designs, but history has amply proven that such sinister conspiracies have never come to fruition. Instability in Afghanistan has a direct link to the overall security environment of the region.

Under certain circumstances, nations inevitably go to the war when they come under attack, or their territorial integrity is threatened. For beating back the aggressors and defend their homeland, they offer sacrifice to enjoy sovereignty and live a life of dignity.

Solh is a word with an Arabic root. It is also widely used in Pashto in relation to peace and reconciliation. Apart from solh, other Arabic words like mowadia, mahadena and masalema are employed in the same context: ending the war. Peace happens when enmity is replaced by amity.
History shows man has long been agonising over the cyclical phenomena of war and peace. In fact, peace is an effective way of averting bloodshed and helping nations enjoy a life of comfort. Reconciliation, therefore, has come to represent a viable option for people.
